Creating a sizable level area for a lawn or playing field often requires significant excavation in South Devon's hilly landscape. The process has to be thorough, first carefully removing all topsoil from the area to be leveled before profiling of the sub-soil begins. This is done with a cut and fill process, compacting the sub-soil in layers to prevent subsidence. Drainage may then be necessary to prevent the newly leveled area from holding excess water during wet periods.
The topsoil is then re-spread over the leveled area in an even layer. Hand raking then achieves the best finished result prior to seeding or turfing.
