Natural stone paving provides an aesthetically pleasing and very durable surface for paved garden areas and steps. Modern natural stone paving is widely calibrated to as thin as 18mm, making handling easier, but therefore requires a very thorough approach to laying. A 75-100mm base of very well compacted sub-base material is first required, onto which the paving is laid on a 50mm full bed of 5-1 wet mortar mix with SBR bond additive to ensure the bond between paving and mortar base will last decades of weather and use. The quality of the pointing is also critical to the final look and durability of the work. Resin sand jointing compounds should be avoided in favour of a very strong 2-1 wet mortar mix using a coarse sand, troweled to a smooth sealed finish that will withstand 25 years of annual pressure washing and weather exposure.
